The river Acheron begins in the mountain masses of the Ioannina prefecture and after 64km flows into the Ioanian sea, creating many eco-systems along its route which are inhabitedby many different species of plants and animals. The river flows through the mountain ranges of western Epirus. Between the mountains of Paramithia and Souli it enters a narrow and impressive ravine. It is an area of unique natural beauty and of great ecological interest. There are organised rafting and horse riding tours availiable. The end of the ravine is near the village of Gliki where there are many restaurants lining the river banks, an ideal spot to cool off, have some lunch or refreshments.
After leaving Gliki, the Acheron enters the Fanari plain where it forms a delta at its estuary in the bay of Ammoudia. The ancient Greeks believed that the river was the path through which Charon guided the souls of the dead to the Acherousia lake, which in its depths was the kingdom of Hades (the land of the dead).
